Founded in the ‘90s by a group of sculptors including André Eugène, Atis Rezistans is a cross-generational collective from the Grand Rue neighbourhood in Port-au-Prince. They work across art, performance and music and, since 2009, have hosted the Ghetto Biennale—“a response to the lack of international mobility for majority class artists which acts as a barrier between them and the global art world”.
Last year they created a sublime space in St Kunigundis for documenta fifteen in Kassel, Germany. Now Ghetto Biennale transforms the neo-gothic grandeur of Alpha60 Chapter House into an evolving exhibition and gathering space for RISING. There’ll be ritual, music and movement set among a living museum of objects—assemblages, portraits and sculptures that merge human ephemera with rusted machine parts and MTV detritus.
A vibrant, chaotic space concerned, in equal parts, with trauma and healing.
