SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM

Friday 23 June—Saturday 8 July

RISING’s School Holiday Program will host DJs that bring a mix of disco, boogie, funk, Afro, Latin, Cumbia, yacht groove, and pop. Meanwhile beginners through to experienced ice-skaters can level-up with ice skating lessons and demonstrations from professional coaches.

Off the ice there’ll be free workshops in the holiday period where budding artists can join Jenna Lee—the artist behind RISING’s 2023 moon design—to make their own bubbly-lunar scapes using ink, straw and paper. Or they can draw on, write on and reflect on giant mirror installations with the team from Playable Streets.

Also, The Rink Food Hall is free to enter and will serve delicious treats for all ages.

EUPHORIA BOOK NOOK AND READING ROOM

A free book club and reading nook inspired by the capital-shaking ideas in Julian Rosefeldt’s major new cinematic work, Euphoria. Look out for it near the exit at Melbourne Town Hall.

Torika Bolatagic on This Bridge Called My Back : Writings by Radical Women of Colour

Tuesday 6 June, 6pm—8pm

Torika Bolatagici is a Fijian-Australian artist, writer and academic working across photography, video, installation, publication, and curation. In 2013 she established the Community Reading Room—a pop-up library space for First Nations, Black, and global Indigenous artists of colour to connect with each other as well as an archive of books and ephemera that privileges the creative practices of their kin, ancestors and peers. Torika will lead a discussion about This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Colour, a feminist anthology edited by Cherríe Moraga and Gloria E. Anzaldúa.

Aurelia St Clair on All About Love : New Visions

Tuesday 13 June, 6pm—8pm

Aurelia St Clair is a comedian, writer, content creator and award-winning podcaster based in Naarm. In 2020, Aurelia was awarded the Stand Up! Grant, and was subsequently selected for the Malthouse Theatre Besen playwright’s group in 2021. In 2022, she was a Hot Desk Fellow at the Wheeler Centre. Her tongue-in-cheek commentary on all things Melbourne has probably graced your 'For You' page at some point. She’ll lead a discussion about All About Love: New Visions—Bell Hooks's interrogation of love and how it challenges oppressive social structures.

City of Melbourne Libraries are filling the shelves with a reading list that reflects and deepens the themes of Julian Rosefeldt's Euphoria. From Mark Fisher's Capitalist Realism to Jamie Marina Lau's Gunk Baby, the ideas and arguments in these books wild, wide-raging and revolutionary. Visit the City of Melbourne Library Euphoria Reading Nook borrowing site to borrow these books and read them at home. There are 14 books on the list that are also available as Daisy Book audiobooks and Braille copies through the Vision Australia Library. One title is available as a Euphoria reading list e-audio book from City of Melbourne Libraries.

Poncili Creación's puppet-making workshop for Night Trade presented by Up

Friday 26 May, 10am—2pm

The Victorian Wooden Boat Shed, Docklands

Poncili Creación are upcycle-savvy Puerto Rican artists who build surreal worlds from discarded couch cushions, papier mâché and whatever else they can salvage. Before they take the over festival’s central meeting place, Night Trade presented by Up, they’re hosting a free workshop for the Central and South American community, and any DIY art enthusiast.

It'll be a four-hour session of hands-on learning where participants will get stuck into making large-scale pole-and-pully operated foam puppets. They'll also help transform a route bus into Poncili Creación's version of a garden paradise. And, once they're done, the work will be exhibited in Night Trade's wild realm of curated chaos!

This workshop will cover:

• Poncili Creación’s process of creating
• Foam carving of puppets
• Pole-and-pully system puppets
• Painting styles for foam

2023 Schools Program

We're getting high school students out of the classroom and into the city for free screenings of Euphoria. Also school excursions to major First Nations exhibition Shadow Spirit come with downloadable resources for teachers. Plus, there’s a kazoo for every classmate who wants to take part in 10,000 Kazoos.

An open invitation to communities of colour

Ghetto Biennale is taking over ALPHA60 Chapter House with a metamorphic celebration of Haitian street culture, spirit guardians and revolution, led by Atis Rezistans (Resistence Artists).

On Thursday 8 June, RISING is hosting a community night, and openly invites communities of colour.

Community Free Tickets to Hide the Dog

Arts Centre Melbourne

Friday 16 June and Saturday 17 June

Free tickets are available for First Nations families keen to see Hide the Dog—a swashbuckling comedy for all ages that strengthens the bonds between trans-Tasman spirit stories. It follows two friends as they sail the high seas to hide the world's last Thylacine. The show is Auslan interpreted and audio described.
